gotta admit that surprises me a lot. Damn Tim seems as game as they come. Wonder what else was influencing that decision? |

Personally for me to make 185 I have to come close to death so if I do that then I will not fight a guy who doesn't make weight. I dont know if that was Tim's issue, but if I sign a fight at 185, I will not fight a guy at 187.5 or even 187.

I agree. From a coaches perspective, it is not fair to your fighter to allow his opponent to fight heavy.

Well here is the quick story, to say that I "didn't make weight" isn't 100% since I was the first one to announce the weight class in which I said would be 190bls. The monkey wrench that was threw into that plan was that Stout decided to drop to 170bls to fight Cam and was suppossedly only able to get back upto 183bls by weigh ins. Then I there was some miscommunication and I didn't find out until last minute that he didn't want to fight 190bls and was adamate about fighting 185. This didn't get me the time to properly get down to 185 and therefore it wasn't excepted. In my opinion technically if I establish the weight class first at 190 bls and there is a 15 bls difference in each class (190-175) then we were within the weight class to fight. Even offered a good percentage of my purse but still didn't except.
But then again, as far as there being something more Blake this isn't the 1st time he's denied me a fight either. This is the 3rd. 1st he wasn't ready, 2nd he backed out 2 days after accepting, and this is the 3rd time. So as far as myself and my coaches are concerned this will be the last attempt for this matchup. Thank you, |

Ok first off, I just want to thank Brett for putting on another excellent show with great matchups. Although you are very busy, you always make sure that the fighters are well taken care of.
I also want to say that the issue between Tim and Rashaad this weekend was totally about the weight. It is true that we have had issues setting this fight up in the past, but that was not because Tim denied anything. The first time the fight was offered, Tim was already confirmed on a card in Kentucky, fighting for a title. Everyone that knows Tim KNOWS he will fight ANYONE in the announced weight division. That list includes the likes of 2 time ISCF amateur champion Andy Foster and pro U.S. champ Cam McHargue (a fight in which Tim took the fight on 3 weeks notice). In fact Tim was ready to fight on the November 20th show, but Rashaad was out due to a hand injury. Simply put, If Tim was not planning to fight Rashaad, then he would not have made weight and traveled 5 hours to do so. As far as the weight itself, we NEVER agreed to 190lbs. Aside from his bout with Cam, Tim has fought at 185lbs since his first fight in Georgia. In order to contend for a title in the middleweight class, you MUST make that weight. However none of this really matters. The bottom line is that Rashaad's camp contacted Brett 3 weeks out asking if we would accept a change in weight to 190lbs, and we said NO. If Rashaad was going to be unable to do this, he should have said so then. Instead he rolled into weigh-ins at 191lbs (a pound heavier than what HE had asked the weight to be moved to), and was upset when we demanded he start cutting weight. In the end he DID end up at 187.5, but that does not cut it. If he could drop that close after an hour and a half of cutting, then he surely could have made weight with 3 weeks notice. Ask Andy Foster, who was spitting in a cup to make weight for his and Tim's fight last year. Andy is a solid light heavyweight and was still able to do it. Cutting weight is part of combat sports whether it be boxing, wrestling, jiu jitus, or mma. You will never see Arturo Ghatti or Bernard Hopkins fail to make weight at weigh-ins. They make the weight out of respect for their opponent, the promoter, the fans, and the sport itself. You can also ask anyone who has ever fought in Pride. If you fail to make weight for their show, then you can forget about ever fighting in Japan again. Either way, if Rashaad is no longer interested in fighting Tim, that is his choice. He has to do what he feels is in his best interest. But as far as Tim is concerned, he doesn't NEED the fight with Rashaad to move on to the next level. He has already proven he will fight the best that is offered to him and will continue to do so. He has won fights and he has lost them, but NOBODY can EVER say he wasn't willing to do it. What A-class or even B-class opponents has Rashaad fought? None. But he still acts as though he was doing Tim a favor by accepting to fight him. After Tim's bout with Cam, Brett asked me if he would still be up for fighting Rashaad at middleweight after dropping so much weight. We assured Brett that he would, because we had already committed to it. We felt that it would make for a very entertaining fight, and that we owed it to the fans. All that we asked is that he make weight. I'm not in the practice of badmouthing back and forth and that is not what I'm doing now. I am simply explaining the situation as to how it concerns me and my team. Truthfully I can't understand what basis Rashaad's camp has for complaining. He didn't meet the guidelines for the bout. Simply put, that is why Tim was paid and Rashaad wasn't. For us, this is all business. Tim and I have no problems personally with Rashaad or any of his camp. We've always felt that the guys on the Georgia scene are like family. And, although we step in the ring with one another, there has always been respect. However, we don't appreciate our integrity being questioned when it was a shortcoming on YOUR part that caused the fight to fall through. In reality, Tim is the one that deserves an apology. He is the one that tore it up in the gym preparing for this fight, only to have it fall through bacause Rashaad wasn't willing to cut the weight. Beyond all this, Team Oxendine wants everyone to know that we love the Georgia Fight Scene and feel privileged to have the opportunities we've had to fight there. We respect each opponent we face, and work hard to give it our all every time we step through those ropes. Thanks and hope to see you soon. Casey Oxendine- Team Oxendine/Helio Soneca |

good reply Casey. Let me play devils advocate for a minute--- 3.5 pounds over- is there any way possible that could affect the outcome of the fight? I mean- isn't rashad basically the exact same fighter at 180 or 183.5?
Again- not taking sides here at all and Casey you know I have a ton of respect for you...just wanted to throw that out there for discussion. |

Well, I would say that this looks impressive but as what I said in my post early was all fact. Your right I didn't get paid....Thats because I never asked brett for any money after the fight was cancelled...why should I?..I'f I didn't fight for him then As far as I am concerned I didn't earn it. I don't accept money just for showing up. If I am going to make any profit from it then I am going to earn it in the ring and not from a technicality. But anyway there was somethings that were incorrect in your post. First off, you said that we were slated to fight on 11/20? actually I was slated to fight David Heultt but pulled out because of my hand being in a cast from a fight 3 weeks prior. Secondly I didnt' have 3 weeks to make 185 because as I said in my post I went into the weigh in's believing we were fighting at 190bls and had no problem cutting down to that weight. The big problem was that here was no agreement on which weight we would fight at and then agreed to from both parties end but that's cool. Third, as far as the comment on who I've fought since it wasn't tim who said that I wont make any attack but I will say that I have fought good competition (last 2 were undefeated and had creditials) and beat them in good fashion and I never said I was doing him a favor! Like I said before there was alot of miscommunication before the fight, but when it was time to fight I personally felt like he should off fought me. You don't train your butt off for months, drive 5 hours and deny a fight for 2.5 bls. For me it's not about the little technicallities and money, etc. its about showing balls and the warrior spirit. I stood there and cut weight till I could barely stand and offered 1/2 my purse and it would of most likely to its toll on me in the fight but I didn't care because I came there to fight and to put one on to the fans. I've fought people heavier than me, so it's not like i'm new to it. It's really your personal opinion on how you look at it. |

All I have to say is, if there is a weight catergory set, I would make damn sure if I had to make that weight, the other guy would also. Unless there was more money offered then I would suggest someone fight anyway depending on how much they were being offered extra. I know the ISCF usually has fighters sign contracts etc. What did it say as far as weight when it was signed, that might shed some light on the whole issue. Also how long did he have to cut the weight? 5 or 6 pounds in an houre seems like it would be pretty easy to cut?

This is the last post I'm going to make on this. What happened friday is done and casting stones any further will do nothing to help the situation. However I will answer the questions posed to me earlier on this thread.
1. The contract stated both fighters would make 185lbs. Period. I don't understand where this stigma that fighters should just let it go because they are "tough enough" is coming from. If the fighter not making weight was all that tough, he would suck it up, diet, and hit the treadmill like every other pro fighter out there does. Thats just part of the game 2. I was originally approached by Brett Moses last year and asked if Tim would be interested in taking the fight with Rashaad. We said yes at middleweight. At no point in that conversation did Brett confirm that Rashaad inded that the fight would be at 190lbs. 3. As far as it being the "norm" to set a fight outside a weight division. This is true in some cases, but not 3 weeks out from a fight. 4. If Rashaad believed that the fight was set at 190lbs from the start, then why did he approach Brett 3 weeks out to ask that we change the weight from 185lbs to 190lbs? That makes no sense. 5. Tim Stout accepted his show purse because Rashaad was in breach of contract, and that money was owed to him. He trained very hard and was insulted that Rashaad was too good to make weight as well. 6. As far as the "Warrior Spirit" is concerned, that all comes after you make weight. If Rashaad would have exhibited a little of that Warrior Spirit while he was cutting weight, then I promise you Tim would have shown you plenty of it in the ring. Everyone watched Bobby Southworth cut nearly 20 lbs to make weight. You know why? Because if he didn't, then he didn't fight. 7. And finally "what difference does 2 pounds make?" Well the difference is Tim made weight and Rashaad didn't. If Rashaad has a difficult time making the middleweight limit, he should fight light heavy. The fact of the matter is Rashaad was much heavier to begin with, and couldn't cut the weight off in time. Fighters try to cut down into lower weight divisions all the time. Hats off to you if you can do it. I accepted a fight with Dan Swift last year at 143lbs. Although I walk around at nearly 160, I still had to make the weight. I starved myself, I ran in a sweat suit, and I went 36 hours without water. But, as miserable as I was, I made it because I wanted it that bad. And because if I hadn't, I wouldn't have fought. I would have been sitting in the bleachers that night with nothing to show for it, just like Rashaad. Its true that there are some cases in which one fighter will give the other a few pounds of leeway on the weight. But in no way is it or should it be expected. Rashaad still had 30 minutes by ISCF rules to keep cutting when Brett called to say the fight was off. He chose to stop then.. with 2 and a half pounds to go. I'm sorry if I'm not sympathetic. As I said, I'm finished talking on the subject. I try to remain respectful of my peers at all times, and anyone that knows me will attest to that. However it is my job to watch after my fighter first and foremost, and that is what I intend to do. I felt like Tim and Rashaad could have been the fight of the year. Its just sad that it will never happen. |
